A variac dimmerstat is a variable autotransformer that lets a user smoothly adjust an AC output voltage from a fixed mains input, using a rotating contact arm on a toroidal winding. In electrical and electronics laboratories it is used to supply a controllable AC voltage to test transformers, motors, heaters and power-electronics circuits at other than full line voltage, and is available in single-phase and three-phase, panel-mounted and portable configurations.
